Kathy's project stuff narrowed to a handful of posts
I narrowed down and prioritize the posts for your reading. Links to the most relevant posts for our process and that are not overly reiterative (though iterations of thoughts still show up--the just how the mulling of one thing leads to the next).

Kathy Kelley :: Project Ideation :: Stumbling into my own amalgamated engendered identity
My project this semester is composed of residual traces of the past couple of months as I have continued head-on run into my own amalgamated resolving feminine identity. I am in the process of codifying it more textually for this class but the current traces are located http://kathykelley.us/tag/art-5364/

kathy - week 8…engendered expectatations "and you will be 'right' and happy"…a note from my grandmother to my mom
admittedly these notions are dated, yet social identity theory suggests that who we are is partially generated through competition and consensual discrimination. this theory proposes that things, our everyday normal in which we are embedded, do not change much. shifts predominately occur when two conditions are met -- inequity and a disruption to the current social hierarchies [status quo]. we see this following the great depression, wwi, wwii, vietnam, etc. so war is a huge disruptor of social hierarchies and typically uncovers inequities...thus we see cultural shifts in the norms following war. on 9/11 as i drove from tampa to houston because my morning flight had been canceled, i decided to quit my job, go back to school for my mfa and in terms of family hierarchies this was my first major decision not influenced by my spouse...i disrupted the marital hierarchies with that decision, quiting my job, and going back for my mfa...all kinds of familial culture shifted.

week 7 -- thinking about female vs male representation -- kathy
thinking about justin's observation of being the one male in an art course and my similar experience teaching the last 8 years or so in the female population in undergraduate art courses significantly out weighing the male. i will venture to suggest this is a trend across the US and not isolated to Tech or Texas. his comment brought to mind things in my paper that i presented last weekend at the art as research conference.
anyhow just for fun I thought i would toss in an image her from the paper i gave last weekend about female self social positioning.

and just for fun here are a view other slides
meaning it wasn't a male bashing talk. in terms of things i am aware of, i am my biggest weak link; so i approached the question of female under representation from this frame work. of course i am not suggesting that female underrepresentation can be isolated in one variable and a self inflicted one at that, I merely consider it as one of a whole buttload of variables interacting to replicate the male/female hierarchy in the art world.
some other slides...though you are seeing them disembowelled from the context of the body of the oral presentation.
Week 7 -- high vs low brow -- Kathy
Reading the quote Dr H pulled out brought several images to my mind (that i keep in my digital library).
...what Shalleck objected to was the defense’s claim that the topless performance in Opera Sextronique was art . . . The judge was an old man with old-fashioned ideas, and Moorman confused him. In his experience, if a woman took her clothes off in front of an audience, a striptease was in progress; alternatively, when a well-groomed young lady appeared on stage in an evening gown with a cello, one could look forward to an artistic experience of the highest order. Moorman didn’t deliver on either promise. (202)
High Art in the 1960s
Piero Manzoni, Living Sculpture, 1961
Hmmm. Off course the same year Manzoni also canned
his own shit, signed it and called it art as well.
MORE HIGH ART
Does this question high art or simply equate the female with shit to sell. Ha. Pretty sure he intended the former and not the later, none the less the implication is inherent.
high brow (art) -- low brow (pop culture) -- high brow (art)
masculinaized -- sexuallized -- de-sexualized/dehumanized
Ha. High brow.

week 3 :: textual self-portraits :: kathy
Gotten off my bum this morning after some of our readings and made a move that is not self diminishing and submitted the following self-portraiture work to a literary journal which had a call for "Like a Girl..."
(1) Damn the unseemly, I bleed
(1) Damn the unseemly, I bleed
I get stuck. The only way I know to unstick is to approach the very moment in which I reside. So I do. I drag myself down the aisle. Cardboard or plastic? Pulling one more green and blue box from the shelf, I trudge the cart-rolling trek back, shamefacedly, to the register. I am sure I still blush with each purchase, wishing it were the last.
But no. George is here again and sitting with me in my mom's chair. I rock wedged between the big open windows of my hermitage and its fireplace. His presence, not that comfy. With his added weight, the wicker bites ridiculous patterns into my rump as I wait his leave. I hate his visits.
